Arc Jacksonville: A Partnership for Empowerment

An Open Letter from a board Member

Hello, my name is Brandon Ashby, and I serve as a board member and advocate for Triumph Industries. On behalf of our organization, I am extending a heartfelt invitation to you, the leaders and members of Jacksonville's Black community—including our esteemed religious institutions, non-profits, and Greek organizations. We want to share a crucial story and invite you to be a part of our mission.

Our goal is to increase awareness of The Arc Jacksonville, an incredible organization dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental differences (IDD). Their work is about providing opportunities and dignity to people, regardless of their background or race. We believe in their mission wholeheartedly, but we know we can do more. That's why we’re also seeking to diversify our board of directors. We see you as a vital part of our future.

Creating Pathways to Employment

One of the most significant challenges for individn uals with IDD is finding meaningful employment. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2023, the employment rate for people with a disability was 22.5%, compared to 65.4% for people without a disability. This statistic highlights a stark disparity and a tremendous need.

The Arc Jacksonville is actively working to close that gap. They offer vital support and vocational training that helps individuals with IDD find and maintain jobs. One inspiring example is Willie, whose success story can be found on The Arc Jacksonville's website. Willie's journey shows what's possible when an organization sees beyond a disability and focuses on a person's potential and success. It's a testament to the power of a supportive community and the right opportunities.

The Power of Diverse Leadership

Your participation on a board is more than just a title; it's an opportunity to influence and shape the future of our community. As the late civil rights icon Vernon Jordan once said, "For black people, board membership is a signal of acceptance into the highest echelon of the American corporate system, and an acknowledgment of their ability to have an impact on major policy decisions." This sentiment holds true for non-profit organizations as well. Serving on The Arc Jacksonville's board offers a unique platform to contribute your wisdom, lived experiences, and passion to make a tangible difference in the lives of many. We are looking for leaders who are ready to join us and help guide our mission.
